Finding Home in an Unexpected Place

I used to live up in Laurel. That is where I met my wife. We were looking at houses in the surrounding area. A daily commute of 10 or 20 miles is not a big deal with our workplace being right off of Route 59. While looking for homes close to where we work, we found apartments in Hattiesburg MS that were really nice. We were not even considering getting an apartment because we have a dog that is family to us. She is like our little girl. Hattiesburg is mostly in Forrest County and part of it goes into Lamar County Mississippi. I was really surprised to find the apartments they have there called Breckenridge that also has a lake and allows dogs.

It is really a nice setup. There is the lake, a clubhouse, a large swimming pool and they even have a theater to use. We toured a couple of the available apartments on a whim. Our dog was with us, and she went into the apartments too. People stopped and said hi and petted our dog. She wagged her tail like crazy and was happy to meet new people. The residents we did see welcomed us. We were feeling pretty good about the place. We let our dog roam in the apartments we checked out. The first one was a one bedroom one bath place. It was really nice, but it felt a little small. We talked about having a room for our baby we were planning as well as a room for an office or for guests who would stay during the holidays.

The next apartment we looked at was a three bedroom unit with three bathrooms. It was really nice. The same appliances that were in the smaller one were here too. There was a refrigerator with icemaker, a dishwasher, a garbage disposal and even a washer and dryer! When our little dog went and curled up on the floor in the master bedroom right where the bed would go, we kind of knew this was home.

From Bulletin Board Services to the Development of the World Wide Web

How many email addresses do you have? Most people have one for work and at least one personal one. Others have junk email addresses they use when trying to get freebies and other things on the Internet. You want the freebie, but you do not want the spam coming into your regular email box. If you are like me, you check one email platform that every other email address forwards to. So, if you have a lot of email addresses, what is your oldest one? My mom still uses and MSN Hotmail sign in. That has been around since about 1995 or so. A lot of the people developing the Internet now were born around that time. Isn’t that crazy to think about?

I can remember before we had the Internet. Some local people would set up their computers to receive calls from others. They would get trunk lines installed at their homes with one phone number. They would have two or three incoming lines. If you called the number, it would ring in on the incoming lines. If one was in use, then the next one would ring in. They would connect those lines to modems installed in a computer. Running in the background was bulletin board software. People could connect and play games and message one another. It was fun. The more lines you had trunked, the more people could connect. We had one where one person could call in at a time, and it was still popular. As soon as one person got off the line, another was calling in.

Then the World Wide Web began to see more use in our area. We connected with a local Internet service provider that had hundreds of dial-up connections and access to that new thing, at the time, where you could type in those WWW addresses. Websites were made of text and simple graphics. They were quite cheesy looking based on today’s standards. It is amazing how far this has come in just a few years.

I’m Not Cut out for the City

I grew up in North Carolina, so it was a huge culture shock to me when I moved to New York City for a job. While I appreciated the opportunity, I never felt comfortable there. I felt so out of place, and I never felt safe. I knew that I would not last long there, which is why I was happy when a teaching position opened up in Asheville. I applied and was hired almost immediately, and I started looking at Asheville apartments for rent the same day I got the good news.

I knew that after living in New York City for two years, I could put up with just about anything in North Carolina. I was not ready to settle like that though. I wanted to be able to see the mountains again. I wanted to look out my window and see the blue sky, the gorgeous mountains, and the trees rather than skyscrapers or ugly apartment buildings next door. When I saw Parkway Crossing, I knew that it was what I was hoping for. I loved looking at the pictures and seeing such a serene setting. I could see the mountains and trees in a lot of the pictures, and there were so many flowers too, right there on the property grounds.

I looked at the floor plans and amenities lists, already knowing it would not take much for me to choose this as my new home. I was happy when I saw that both the amenities and the floor plan were filled with more than I could imagine. I was able to fill out an application online, and I was given the dates that I could move in. It would allow me enough time to have my furniture and other possessions taken there, and still have a two week vacation before my new job starts!

Scrap Copper Can Add Up

When I bought an old farmhouse for a really low price, I had so many ideas for it. I wanted to remodel it, and I was able to get all of that started since I paid a fraction of what it was worth. It took me nearly six months to get the house how I wanted it, then I decided to start working on the outbuildings. There were at least a dozen of them, and I had only looked in the barn. I knew that I was going to have to find out the price of scrap copper after looking in some of the others though.

I had no idea I was going to find so much copper, and I got pretty excited about it because I know that copper can bring in a nice price. I had no clue how much copper was there, but it was at least several truckloads. I went online and did a quick search to see how much copper was going for, and that is when I found the perfect website. It not only showed me the different prices for all kinds of scrap metals, but it also listed the scrap dealers that are the closest to me too.

I am really glad that it had all of this listed, because I found out that a scrap dealer that is about 20 minutes further away was offering a lot more money for the various pieces of metals that I had accumulated from clearing out all of the buildings on my farm. It was not really so much more per pound when there is not much metal to consider, but several truckloads makes those few pennies per pound really add up. Altogether, I ended up with enough that I was able to make a nice payment on my mortgage to make my monthly payments even smaller now.

Getting out in the World Was Right for Me

Exploring the world is something that I wanted to do from a very young age. I guess that happens a lot to people who live in small towns that don’t have all that much to offer the people who live there. So I moved overseas to try to broaden my world view, and I have loved every minute of it. The only snag I’ve run into is was living in a building that I wasn’t happy with. I found some cheap movers in Singapore to help me move. The problem was solved!

I came to this country after learning that two old friends had come here to work as English tutors. I got my English degree in college, so I knew that type of job would be one that I could handle easily. I decided to turn my resume in to business here that hires Americans as English tutors on a lark. I really didn’t expect much. I didn’t even think that I would even hear back from anyone. I didn’t have high hopes because I often do not have good luck. But within just two weeks of turning in my resume, I got an email asking me to select a time for an interview. I was elated and surprised. I brushed up on my interview skills, had a great talk with the hiring person, and was told that the job is mine if I wanted to accept it and move there.

Moving to another country is not as daunting as one might thing. In fact, I found it to be no trouble. I rented one of the first places that I found online, which was not really smart on my part. But after I had been living here for awhile, I was able to look around and find the right place and move there easily enough.
